Clay Industry
Along with coal, clay is found in the South Tyne pits. This formed the basis for a flourishing industry during the 1800s with large brick and tile works on either bank. Clay was draw out of the pits and along the wagon-way by ponies. The bricks can be seen in many Haltwhistle houses of the period.
One of the workers in these factories was a Mr. William Reay who left to found his own pottery in Bardon Mill., The Errington Reay Pottery which is still making salt glazed pots today.
The remains of a brick and sewage pipe works can still be seen on The Burn.
